Birth Centers were designed for low risk, healthy mothers and babies. We have two free standing Birth Centers in San Diego and another currently under construction in North County.
UCSD medical center is currently the only hospital that has an actual Birth Center in it. Other hospitals may call some part of their labor and delivery a "birth center" but it is not the same. UCSD is also a "Baby Friendly Hospital" which means that they have earned this title by implementing guidelines with baby care and encouraging breastfeeding. All staff on the Birth Center floor are trained in breastfeeding and support. It is a wonderful operation!
There is a very home like atmosphere at a birth center and this helps keep mom relaxed and calm during birth. There aren't a lot people and staff around - it's pretty private.
You can wear your own clothes, eat and drink what yo want and your natural birth preferences are well received since that is what they do in a Birth Center.
Insurances do cover Birth Centers so check it out. You will receive midwifery care and there is a consulting doctor if issues arise they feel need to be looked at. You and your birth partner and/or family are all welcome and you may go home soon afterward to rest in your own bed.
